Chapter Twenty-Two

As Thomas arrived at the car park at headquarters, he tried to persuade Louise once again to come home with him. The CVS procedure had been a success, the specialist successfully taking the necessary sample from the placenta. Although it had been obtrusive, the consultant had remained calm and professional throughout and had assured Louise that everything was fine, at least for the time being. Initial results would be with them in a few days – when they would potentially have to face a life-changing decision – but they could be waiting much longer for the potential bowel obstruction to correct itself.

What was she supposed to do with that information? Thomas had wanted her to go home, suggesting they sit together and watch old films and eat popcorn, but that would only give her mind a chance to wander. Far better to be back at work, doing the one thing she was good at.

‘You can pick me up at six,’ she said to Thomas, as he parked up outside the main entrance. ‘I need to do some work before the weekend.’

‘You won’t be going in tomorrow?’ asked Thomas, with a resigned laugh.

‘That’s to be determined. But I’m not going to sit around moping. The baby’s fine, the procedure was a success. All we can do now is wait. Let’s not spend the next couple of days worrying,’ said Louise, doubting her own words as she said them.

‘I’ll be here at six,’ said Thomas, as Louise left the car.

‘Best call me first,’ she replied with a grin, shutting the door before Thomas had the chance to argue.
